It’s time to make a pledge and support local restaurants. The alternative isn’t pretty .
“Restaurants are among the hardest hit sectors of our local economy during this pandemic. We really fear the potential of vibrant, community recognized businesses being forced to close for good. “We can’t stand by and let this happen,” says Scarborough Business Association president, Andrea Hazell.
So, the SBA has launched a new initiative. On Friday February 12 at 10:30am check out the SBA’s February Festival of Food online event, celebrating Scarborough’s food culture and encouraging people to support local restaurants.
This event kicks off the Valentine’s Day weekend and highlights our food culture, offers one-stop access to local menus and provides a glimpse of how restaurants are working to survive.
“This is an event for both restaurateurs and the public to learn about business resiliency and also what great food Scarborough has to offer,” says Hazell.
At the event you’ll hear about a number of local initiatives to help restaurants survive and thrive during economic uncertainty. University of Toronto Students will unveil a new app they’ve created to help Scarborough consumers

What you’ll experience: Local food experts detailing the state of Scarborough’s food economy and efforts to keep it vibrant. Participants will see menus from numerous Scarborough restaurants.

“We hope participants – if they are able – will resolve to use the services of local takeout or delivery from restaurants once, if not twice a week,” says Hazell.
The SBA is not alone in this initiative. In honor of Black History Month, Matrix Mortgage Global and Winspire Generational Wealth Solutions are sponsoring the event.
Supporters of the project include, Centennial College, University of Toronto Scarborough, Scarborough Health Network (SHN), Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB), EatMore Scarborough Tours, Executive Chef Suman Roy, and local restaurants.
“We are all in this together and we in Scarborough are stronger if we all work together,” says Hazell.
